She held up her hands. “I’ll be hands free with them. It’s the others I can dream about.”

She walked off and I got back to work. It was maybe an hour later when a throat being cleared got my attention. I turned around to see my dad. He looked nervous. I hurried over to him. He pulled out of his jacket a bundle of papers. I took them. “Let me put these in my purse then I can see if I can find you a table. Stay right here.”

I raced into the employee lounge and shoved the papers into my purse. When I got back to my dad, I waved for him to follow me. I peeked out the door that led from the kitchen to the eating area. A quick check showed me none of the Warriors were here. I pushed the door open and led him to the waitress.

“Will you please find my dad a seat? He’s staying for dinner.” She gave me a surprised look but didn’t say anything. Everyone knew that my dad had beat the hell out of me. She scowled at Dad. “Dad, go with her and enjoy a meal. Thank you for bringing those to me. If I get a chance, I'll come out and talk to you for a minute.”

“Okay, that sounds good. Get back to work. I know you’re busy.” Before I left, he quickly gave me a peck on the cheek then went with the waitress. I was stunned as I went back to the kitchen. He hadn't kissed me in a year-and-a-half. Maybe my real dad was coming back. The thought bolstered my mood and I was smiling even more as I cooked my heart out.

That is until Sadie came racing into the kitchen. She came straight for me. “Your dad is here and Alexus said you told her to seat him! What the hell is going on?” she hissed.

“I saw him earlier today and we talked. I told him to come here tonight. He brought me something I asked for from the house. He’s fine. He’s going to enjoy a home-cooked meal then go. Dad won’t be causing any trouble. I swear.”

“Brynlee, he beat you so bad you had to go to the hospital!”

“I know that. I also know that he was drunk when he did it. He’s in AA now, working to stay sober. I’m not going back home or anything, Sadie. I just need to see if I can get my old dad back.”

“Tank will lose his shit when he finds out.”

“No, he won’t, because I’m not going to tell him until I know he can take it. Please, leave it alone,” I pleaded.

She sniffed then stomped out of the kitchen. My good mood was ruined, but I went back to work. As I made more meals, one of which was my dad’s, I had to wonder if I was doing the right thing. I hated that I lied to Tank and was planning to lie to him about this.
